Please be aware of the following caveats:

• The authors can speak mostly for the large Unix installations at Concordia, but have much less experience with non-Unix platforms, so issues surrounding the latter are covered in less depth.
• The authors have mentioned the security measures of which they are aware; it is likely that some have been omitted. If so, our apologies to the astute sysadmins who implemented those measures.
• This report is presented by its authors to their respective departments, and represents the opinions of the authors only. Of course, the authors hope that their departments will accept their recommendations.

Updated versions of this report may be issued in the future. We welcome comments and corrections.

We hope that our report will not only serve as a tool for sysadmins and technical people, but will serve to sensitize the University community to the importance of safe computing.
