Concordia anti-relay: information for users

Here's a note that was posted to the Concordia newsgroups in December 1997, concerning changes to mail submission procedures brought about by the centralized anti-spam project:

Date: Mon Dec 8 21:19:31 1997 EST Newsgroups: concordia.dept.iits.help,concordia.general,concordia.announce Followup-To: concordia.dept.iits.help Distribution: qc Subject: COMPUTER: using POP (Eudora) from offsite From: Systems and Software Group <anne@alcor.concordia.ca> This message concerns anyone using a POP client mailer (such as Eudora) while connected to the net through an ISP. (It does *not* apply if you are using a CMAC account, or using "slirp" through Concordia's dial-up chain.) You may have noticed my announcement a few days ago with respect to centralized anti-relay e-mail services. This may affect you if you use Eudora or a similar e-mail software package to submit mail messages from offite; note that *reading* your mail is not affected. The anti-relay provisions mean that you may not use a Concordia machine as a "relay" to submit mail not destined for Concordia. Also, most Concordia machines will no longer be accessible for any kind of mail relay services. (Again, this does *not* apply to *reading* your mail.) To continue to be able to send e-mail normally, you must use your ISP's mail relay host; the hostname of this machine can be obtained from your ISP's literature, or from its support personnel. This requires changing the settings on your software. If you are using Eudora, here's how to modify your settings: 1. In Eudora (version 3+), click on "special" on the top menu bar. 2. From the sub menu that this produces, select "settings...". 3. You should then see a scrollable series of icons. Select "hosts". 4. This opens a selection including a box entitled "SMTP". Enter the hostname of your ISP's mail relay machine, e.g.: smtp.local-isp.net 5. The other boxes should be left unchanged. Click on 'ok'. I'm putting up more information at /nonalcor/email/concordia_antispam.html If you have problems or questions, please post to the help newsgroup, concordia.dept.iits.help, and I'll be happy to assist.
